OLD BASS RIVER TOWNSHIP, N.J. MAPS

Old maps are valuable tools in the study of the history and geneology of our area. Following are some old maps of Bass River and the surrounding area. The Otley-Whiteford and the Kuhn-Janney maps are especially helpful in that they identify specific houses with the family surname. Click on the map that you would like to view. OTLEY-WHITEFORD 1849 BURLINGTON COUNTY MAP

h-maps-otley1849-maplogo.jpg The 1849 Otley-Whiteford Map identifies the New Gretna area as HARMONY. This identity is specific to a narrow time frame from the late 1840's thru the early 1850's on this and a few other maps. There is no supportive documentation that the New Gretna area was ever officially or unoffically called HARMONY by the local government or residents. It is probable that the name HARMONY was either (1) A mistake made by the map maker; (2) A prank played by the map maker; (3) An intentional error devised so that the copying of the map by another firm could be detected and proven; or (4) An unintentional error copied from another map maker.

A special thank you to Shirley and Leslie Whealton who provided the Otley-Whiteford map for digital scanning.
